Wild Amazon Parrots in Orange County

After moving to the Park Santiago area near the Santa Ana Artist’s Village a few months ago, I was astonished by the flocks of parrots flying by my home early in the morning and late at night. I was so intrigued by the birds that I tried numerous times to snap a photo of them hanging out in the trees and on wires so I could sketch them. Alas, they are fairly elusive and I haven’t captured a single shot yet.

However, Oceanview Gallery in San Clemente has the work of local artist Evelyn Fernadez on display. She was able to paint a gorgeous piece of the parrots.

I did a bit more research on these beautiful birds and it turns out that no one knows exactly how they got here! There are several stories floating around about an exotic bird dealer freeing the parrots, illegal bird trades, and many others.  The best place to find correct information is through this organization: http://www.californiaparrotproject.org

You can view some gorgeous shots of they have captured of the parrots below.
